Happy Tuesday!

Today we started our Father’s Day crafts and took our Reading and Spelling tests for Henry and Mudge. We are so excited that we are done tests in Reading and Spelling and our last Math test is tomorrow on counting money!  The children were also very excited to hear that tonight is the last night of homework for first grade!

If anyone is interested, I posted some coin counting games from ABCya.com to make the studying a little more fun! We have played these games in class.

http://www.abcya.com/money_bingo.htm — Money Bingo

http://www.abcya.com/learning_coins.htm — Coin Identification and Counting

Homework:

Math: Purple Math book pg. 409 (Quick Check — ONLY front side) Review pages in Chapter. We will be skipping over HALF DOLLARS so no need to study those.  I have also sent home the green Math homework book if you would like to look over any of those pages.

Topics to Review

  1. Identifying all coins (except half dollars)
  2. Counting change up to a dollar. Be sure to practice counting on from numbers that end in 5 (45 cents) and adding on a dime (10 cents). This can be tricky!
  3. Making different ways to show an amount using different combinations of coins

Have a great night!

Good Afternoon!

Today we continued to work on counting money for our Money assessment on Wednesday. Please go over counting mixed groups of coins (pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters) in preparation for Wednesday. Many of us need to practice going from 25 cents and counting on additional change.

We will be having our final Reading/Spelling assessment tomorrow on Henry and Mudge. We did not have it on Friday because we had so much fun at Lauren Day!

REMINDER: If anyone has any Library books at home, please bring them in ASAP! We are no longer taking books out of the Library. If you cannot find it, please email me or send in a note so I can send home the price of the book. Thanks!

Happy Fun Day!

We had so much fun today seeing a Magician, playing Candy Bingo, having Rita’s Water Ice, seeing a Science Show, and doing obstacle courses outside! Thanks so much to the PTA for providing a whole day of fun!

Since our week has been jumbled and full of fun, I am moving the Reading/Spelling test to Friday, June 2nd. We have been studying the Spelling words in class and reading the story for a week and a half, so I will send home the reader tomorrow to review.  On Friday, we will also be celebrating “Lauren Day” in honor of Lauren Diorio. We will be going to mass at 9am. Your child is allowed to wear orange or a combination of yellow and red if orange is unavailable.

Good Afternoon!

Today we had a special visit from Mr. Softee during recess today! During Math, we started a more advanced level of counting mixed groups of coins with pennies, nickels, and dimes. We are practicing starting with the coin that has the highest value and working our way down. It is imperative that you work with your child at home to count change. It would be helpful to use actual coins and count mixed groups of pennies, nickels, and dimes.

Homework:

Reading: Read Henry and Mudge: Mrs. Hopper’s House.  Practice High Frequency Words.

Spelling: Review Spelling Words (Unit 4, Week 6)  High Frequency Words: across and because.

Math: pg. 94 (Counting Groups of Coins) — Practice counting actual change (groups of pennies, nickels, and dimes)

Have a great night!

Good Afternoon!

Today we continued to review the suffixes -ly and -ful. We also were introduced to the -oo sound like in the works smooth and took. In Math, we are counting groups of coins that are different. We did groups of dimes and pennies today.

In Family Life, we have been discussing how we are supposed to take care of our bodies because they are a gift from God. We talked about healthy food choices, safety (things that can harm our body), and what to do if we are faced with a hard choice that could harm our body. We even got to act out some skits to show different situations! 🙂

Remember: Mass on Thursday – 9am (Ascension Thursday).    Field Day — Friday, 12:30 Dismissal.

Homework:

Reading:  Daily Practice book pg. 115 (oo sound) — Decodable Reader: Read and Sign

Good Afternoon!

I hope everyone had a wonderful Mother’s Day and enjoyed the craft the children brought home! They had so much fun making it and couldn’t wait to give it to you! A look at the week ahead: We will not be testing Reading or Spelling for the Long I (igh, ie) sound. We are just covering this Phonics skill and will be starting our new Phonics skill tomorrow which is Compound Words, and Vowel Sounds: ew, ue, and ui.

In Math, we will be having an alternate assessment on Time on Wednesday. They will only have to know how to tell time to the hour and half hour. Our song/chant for telling time to the half hour is “If the hand is in the middle, you choose the one before!”. This will help your child recognize that when the hour hand is in the middle of two numbers, they choose the number that comes first. We have briefly started identifying and counting coins today as well.

Homework:

Reading: Daily Practice book pg. 97 (High Frequency Words)

Math: pg. 87 (Practice Telling Time)

Have a great night!

Good Afternoon!

Today we reviewed for Mister Bones: Dinosaur Hunter and practiced writing answers to short answer questions. We talked about restating the question in your answer and using words from the test and question for help with spelling.

We will be going to Mass tomorrow to celebrate our May Liturgy at 9am. Please join us!

Please note: We are nearing the end of the year! In an effort to cover more Math topics, I will be doing two sessions of Math per day. We covered time to the hour and how long a minute was today. I will let you know what sections we will be covering. For the most part, I will not be conducting formal assessments for this. If I choose to, I will of course let you know beforehand.

Additional Note: For the next couple of stories in Reading, I will NOT be assessing them on the story. We will be going over the Phonics skill and Spelling words and reading the story. I will keep you up-to-date on what we are doing with each story.

Good Afternoon!

Today we started our centers for Mr. Bones and also learned about 3-Letter Consonant Blends (spl, str, etc.) Tomorrow we will have our Math Assessment on Chapter 10: Tens and Ones. Please go over the homework pages tonight (pgs. 63-70).

Here is a sample problem for the test tomorrow. Many of us had difficulty with this today so please go over again at home for review.  There is 1 question like this on the test.

Question: Adam has 63 crayons that he wants to put in boxes. Each box holds 10 crayons. How many boxes does Adam need?

Solution: We first look at the TENS place in the number 63. This way we know that we need 6 boxes. We draw 6 boxes with the number 10 inside to show there are 10 crayons in each box.  We then look at the ONES place in the number 63. This tells us we need an extra box to put the 3 left-over crayons in. ANSWER: 7 boxes.

Homework:

Reading: Daily Practice book pg. 85. Read Decodable Reader.

Math: pg. 70. Go over all homework pages and practice words problems especially!

Have a great night!

The kids definitely enjoyed this song!  We also learned about Inflected Endings where the word ends in Y and you add the letter I.  Example: happy, happier, happiest. A little song that helped us with this was “Cross out the Y, and put in an I”.
