Spread the Good News

Building upon our school's theme, Spread the Good News, Christ serves as our model of showing us how to apply God’s Word in Scriptures to our daily life.  Catholic Schools' Week started with Mass and an Open House.  During Catholic Schools' Week we saw the play New Kid about bullying, attended the band concert, and ended the week with a Spirit Day in the Gym. Every grade created a commercial for Spirit Day about what they love about St. Joan of Arc.  Fifth grade also wrote to the Sisters of St. Joseph who are retired and live in the Villa. On February 24th the children graduate from the DARE Program. They are looking forward to graduation.

Our fifth grade atmosphere is a fun-filled environment using brain based strategies.  As a team we work on our strengths and manage areas we need to improve upon. Teaching respect and learning good communication skills helps us foster our friendships and relationships with others.

Our brain-compatible strategies in Math reinforce important life skills. This past couple of  months we worked on division with one and  two digit divisors. These skills are incorporated with alegbra skills.   This month we are adding and subtracting decimals, reinforcing averaging, and using the divisibility rule to find factors of a number.   We reinforced the basic skills using the Promethean Boards, dry erase boards, decimal squares, and calculators. In addition we integrate math in many other subjects such as science and computer classes. .

Fifth grade focuses on the states and regions of the United States in Social Studies. We explore the different regions.  Students learn about the diversity and awesome creations of God's world. Currently, we are learning about the New England region and the Mid-Atlantic region.  Later this month during class, the students will record their activites for a  24 hour day.  This data will be used to create a circle graph or pie chart in Computer class.
