Mrs. Riley's First GradeA Classroom

Welcome to St. Joan of Arc’s 1A Classroom.  Our theme this year is "Spread the Good News.”

“Listening to the Littlest”

by Ruth Reardon

ACCEPT ME--

for what I am

Not what I could have been

or even will be.

Accept me.

Acceptance must be present tense,

with no conditions,

and based upon reality.

If windows of your heart

must rosy-tinted be

you have not accepted me.

See me as I am without distortion

of your dreams . . .

A human being, beautiful, unique.

Free to grow according to the seed

within myself.

Accept me –

so I need not twist myself

to fit your pattern .

But resting in acceptance,

can grow.

RELIGION

Since family values influence the children's understanding of God and the effectiveness of their religious education experience, each religion lesson has a Take Home Family Time page at the beginning of each chapter.  It's designed to preview the content of the chapter, tell about a saint of the week, scripture bachground, and our Catholic traditions.  Each chapter begins with a song, a sharing experience, discussing a scripture story, what our Catholic Church teaches, and a hands-on activity.  In closing, there's a prayer celebration, chapter review, and test.

     In Septermber we will cover:

1.  We Belong to Jesus' Church

2.  We Gather t o Celebrate Mass

3.  God's Word Teaches Us

MATH

The children will start with things they already know - counting, sorting, and ordering.  They will learn about adding, subtracting, and solving problems.  Authentic literature selections enable young learners to connect math to their own world.  To introduce Unit 1 we will read "Aunt Flossie's Hats (and Crab Cakes Later)" by Elizabeth Howard.  This story will help the children review counting, adding, and subtracting concepts.

A Math at Home letter will be sent home at the beginning of each unit.

    READING

The children will take a trip along a famous street - Scott Foresman Reading Street.  On this trip in Unit 1 they will meet exciting characters such as a pig in a wig, a blue ox, and a dinosaur.  As they read these stories they will gain exciting new information that will help them in Science and Social Studies.

Priority Skills and Success Predictors for the teacher ensures success for students of varying ability levels and experiences, and reinforces instruction with intensive reading intervention.  There is a daily plan for whole group teaching and also time to address individual needs.
