Mrs. Smith's Library Classroom
Welcome to our St. Joan of Arc School Library! I have been the St. Joan of Arc School Librarian for 19 years - a position which brings me much
happiness. My hope is to give our students a lifelong love of reading by
ensuring our library is an inviting, enjoyable, and non-threatening
environment.
All students grades K- 8 visit our
library weekly and have the opportunity to check out a book of their choosing. Within our library the books are categorized into age appropriate
sections. Our "easy reading" books for the younger students are
divided into sections: kindergarten, first grade non-fiction and fiction, and
second grade non-fiction and fiction. Grades three to eight make their
selection from the remaining non-fiction area and fiction area, which includes
a young adult fiction section for 7th and 8th grade students.
Our collection has over 10,000 volumes
providing students with those books necessary for school projects as well as
personal enjoyment reading. The library has been automated
using the Follett system, allowing our students to utilize a computer to locate
and check out their books. Our kindergarten and first grade students have
storytime weekly. Beginning in first grade our students are taught
the Dewey Decimal system in order to provide them with the necessary
skills to locate books.
