Second Grade Curriculum

Religion

A student will be able to:

  • appreciate his/her call to follow Jesus
  • identify the sacraments
  • celebrate the sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist
  • have a deeper understanding of the Mass as a sacred meal of sacrifice
  • relate instruction to life experience
  • exemplify Christian values

Math

A student will be able to:

  • know addition and subtraction facts to 18 with regrouping
  • understand the concepts of multiplication and division
  • estimate and measure using standard and non standard tools
  • make change up to one dollar
  • recognize a fractional part of a whole
  • problem solving using classification, ordering, graphing
  • understand concept of place value to the thousands place
  • tell time at hour, half hour, and quarter hour intervals
  • compare and contrast plane/solid figures

Language Arts

A student will be able to:

  • set purpose for reading: enjoyment, information, instruction
  • make predictions using pictures and context clues
  • recognize base words, prefixes, and suffixes
  • identify main idea and supporting details
  • recognize statements of inference
  • understand multiple meanings of words in context
  • identify story characters, setting, problem, and solution
  • use guide words in dictionary and glossary
  • show beginning, middle, and end sequence
  • recognize and accurately form upper/lower case letters using cursive writing
  • recognize long and short vowel sounds and patterns
  • identify sentences that tell, ask, command, and exclaim

Science

A student will be able to:

  • recognize the properties of: matter, magnets, and living things

Social Studies

A student will be able to:

  • recognize and understand communities and citizenship
  • use map legends
  • understand the significance of holidays

  • Introduction to book reports

Art

A student will be able to:

  • use the design elements of line, shape, color, texture, and space
  • learn the basic skills of perspective

Computer

A student will be able to:

  • turn on and shut down a computer
  • activate a Windows program
  • insert clipart from our Network into a Microsoft Word file
  • use a variety of computer programs to enhance skills in other subject areas

Library

A student will be able to:

  • visit weekly and check out a library book for the week
  • identify the structure of a book and the proper treatment of a book
  • identify fiction and non-fiction books
  • learn to use the Dewey Decimal System

Music

A student will be able to:

  • read and perform rhythms including eighth notes, half notes, and quarter notes
  • sing using solfege syllables of do and fa and note them on the musical staff
  • sing songs of different ethnic flavor
  • participate in solo singing
  • sing and praise God with Church songs

Physical Education

A student will be able to:

  • practice basic manipulative skills with equipment - bean bags, balls, hoops, Frisbees, scooters, jump ropes, and parachutes
  • explore locomotor movements with added complexity
  • play cooperative and recreational games
  • participate in sport lead-up games - soccer, basketball, volleyball, and kickball

Spanish

A student will be able to:

  • state the days of the week, months, and seasons of the year in Spanish
  • Introduce themselves and other s in Spanish
  • Play games and sing songs in Spanish
  • identify: colors, numbers zero to twenty, foods, clothing, the face, animals, classroom objects, family, community, and the Spanish alphabet
