Sixth Grade Curriculum

Religion
A student will be able to learn:

  • study and explore the Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament)
  • understand that God makes use of both the strengths and weaknesses of human beings to carry out His plan
  • understand the role and message of the prophets
  • grow in an awareness and appreciation of God's fidelity and goodness

Math

A student will be able to:

  • make and explain line, bar and circle graphs with clear intervals
  • work within customary and metric systems of measurement
  • estimate, add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions and mixed numbers
  • add, subtract, multiply and divide decimals
  • explore the meaning of ratio, proportion, and percent
  • classify and analyze geometric shapes
  • make predictions from statistics
  • add and subtract equations using inverse operations
  • explain the properties of numbers
  • use a Math journal to express and review concepts learned

Social Studies

A student will be able to:

  • explain the influence of the natural environment on the lifestyles of people through an understanding of the five themes of geography
  • examine the development of the ancient civilizations and their contributions to each succeeding civilization
  • locate continents mainly in the Eastern Hemisphere; on a blank map label these continents and their primary political divisions as they exist today
  • acquire an historical understanding of varying ancient cultures on modern day cultures

Science

A student will be able to:

  • use the scientific method to test hypotheses
  • know basic cell structure in a plant and animal
  • describe and classify matter
  • use the Periodic Table of Elements
  • use graphs to display data
  • distinguish between physical and chemical matter
  • distinguish between living and non-living things
  • discuss meteorology and how storms such as hurricanes and tornadoes form
  • describe how the movement of Earth’s plates cause volcanoes and earthquakes

Language Arts
A student will be able to:

  • explore the literary elements of plot, setting, theme and characterization through a study of novels and anthologies
  • explore non-fictional writing and reading
  • use the elements of poetry
  • make inferences, analyze, and draw conclusions from materials read
  • recognize correct grammatical structures
  • daily expansion of vocabulary

Art

A student will be able to:

  • create compositions that give the illusion of three-dimensional space
  • communicate thoughts and ideas through the completion of diverse projects
  • learn a variety of artistic styles and techniques

Computer

A student will be able to:

  • continue to access the school network with a user name and password
  • import a graphic from another directory
  • work more on skills for Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point
  • use a variety of computer programs to enhance classroom curriculum

Library

A student will be able to:

  • visit weekly and check out a library book for enjoyment reading and a book to supplement classroom assignments
  • use the Dewey Decimal System
  • use all library skills taught

Music

A student will be able to:

  • perform and recognize complex meters
  • sing two part songs
  • understand the changing male voice
  • analyze music elements of rhythm, melody, and tone color
  • sing and praise God with Church songs

Physical Education
A student will be able to:

  • refine sport skills and increase individual fitness
  • participate in cooperative, recreational, and sport lead-up games
  • participate in activities requiring teamwork and cooperation

Spanish

A student will be able to:

  • identify numbers zero to one h undred, months and dates in Spanish, frequently used expressions, gender and plurals, definite and indefinite articles, occupations and possessive adjectives,  regular ar, er and ir verbs
  • Grade appropriate lessons are organized by topics familiar to the students, such as weather, mealtime, holidays and sports

Our Sixth Grade Program features:

  • In depth study of novels by the completion of contracts and book discussions
  • Exposure to the Arts through plays and other creative modalities
  • use of portfolios to individualize students' learning
  • use of journal writing to express individual thoughts and feelings
  • unit topics are concluded with hands-on activities (ex: Metric Olympics, etc.)

Goals, Expectations and Policies

Student will:

  • continue to use respect and responsibility when making daily choices
  • work together to become a team
  • develop good study habits that will enable them to work to their full ability
  • be responsible for work missed during an absence
  • complete all written homework when assigned and study all subjects daily
  • earn report card grades based on class participation, tests, homework, notebooks, and projects
  • receive tests to be taken home on Wednesdays in a yellow folder.  Please sign each test and return the yellow folder within two days
